32 weeks!
Here we are at week 32! 32 weeks, 2 days today, it’s still so hard to believe. This pregnancy has been so unexpected and unpredictable and has had so many changes, just like our journey to get here in the first place. We had a doctors appointment this morning, and we were anxious to find out how the babies are measuring! We only get weight checks for the babies every 4 weeks, so it had been a while and wanted to see how they were growing. Well, they are still growing right on track (even a bit ahead still which is rare for triplets)! Ultrasound looked good- the one thing they have been monitoring since about 16 weeks has been Baby B’s left kidney. It appears to have fluid in it, and they were waiting to see if it would correct itself. As of today, there was still some fluid so they are referring us to a pediatric urologist once he is born. It doesn’t sound like it’s a major issue but they aren’t able to tell what the exact issue is or do any testing while in the womb. We will meet with the urologist before he’s born to get more information on what it could be and possible treatment options (could be surgery or as minimal as antibiotics) and then once he’s about a month old they will evaluate him. Thankful for our doctors being proactive and helping us get all of this coordinated! The fact they aren’t planning on doing anything immediately after birth is reassuring that it isn’t a major concern.
During the ultrasound they also conducted a biophysical on each baby. Each baby gets scored for 5 things, 2 points each. They either get a 2 or a 0 on each category. If any baby gets below 8/10 they evaluate and could end up either delivering right away or hospitalizing me for constant monitoring. The categories are practice breathing (watching to see if the babies are moving their diaphragms) muscle tone, movement, amniotic fluid, and heartbeat. Baby A and B both received 10/10 and baby C got an 8/10 as she was not practicing breathing. They weren’t worried since everything else looked good and it was possible she was sleeping at the time of the monitoring. So, they all passed and the doctors were very happy with the results. I will have these biophysicals weekly till the babies come. Oh and the current weights are: baby A, 4.8 lbs, Baby B 4.12 lbs and Baby C 4.3 lbs. they won’t weigh them again before they are born, but they would be great weights for triplets if they came today! I now have over 13 lbs of Baby in me- kind of crazy to think about!! No wonder it feels so heavy! I am also measuring 45 cm, ha ha! I am 45 weeks pregnant!! It sure does feel that way ;)
Everything else is looking good, no concerns about blood pressure, still no swelling. I did have 2-3 contractions while I was on the monitor today but no concerns as they weren’t close enough together and I wasn’t feeling them. Really the only thing is that I’m exhausted and uncomfortable, and congested. I have so much fluid throughout my body and it’s hard to breathe, especially at night laying down. Anyone who has been pregnant knows the end sucks and nights are hard, so I’m not getting much sleep. Because of this my doctor has agreed that I will be done with work next week. I will hopefully be able to take some time to rest before the C section (or whenever they decide come!)
Less than a month and they will be here! Because of their size and how long they’ve been staying put, we’ve been told they may not need any (or minimal) NICU time. Unbelievable, considering 10 weeks ago it was a whole different story. There is no way to know until they are born and are evaluated, but that has been kind of a game changer thinking that maybe we will be bringing 3 babies home with us three days after birth!! Of course, anything can happen, we may bring one or two home, or none. We are just trusting that the doctors know best and will do everything they can to ensure they are healthy.
Because of all the unknowns and to keep our sanity intact :-) at this time we are asking for please no visitors in the hospital other than both sets of parents. We are also asking that once we get home we have some time with Tom and I to bond with the babies and allow us to figure out breastfeeding, getting them on a schedule, and adjusting to life as a family of five. My mom and a small number of family members are planning on being here to help so we won’t be totally alone, which we are grateful for. We have had so many people along side us with this journey and praying for us, giving us gifts and encouragement and are so grateful. The babies will be born during peak flu and RSV season and the doctors have been pretty vocal about not having many visitors for the first few weeks of their lives. We hope everyone will understand our fears with this - just know are SO excited to introduce them to you all once the time is right!!
Thanks again for all of the love throughout this wild ride. One journey is ending but another beautiful, terrifying, awesome one is about to begin ;)
